Marvin Engram Roberson was born June 29, 1961, in Hillsborough, NC, to the late James Roberson and Ruthie C. Bradsher Roberson. He is the grandson of the late Tom and Nanny Farrish Bradsher. Marvin graduated from Orange High School, Class of 1979, and later received a BFA degree at North Carolina School of the Arts. He also trained with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York.
Marvin was an accomplished dancer and showcased his talents in various productions worldwide, including in major cities across the U.S., Europe, Australia, and Japan. He was part of the internationally successful Starlight Express and the legendary Broadway musical Cats where he played the role of Mr. Mistoffelees. His other Broadway credits include The Wiz, West Side Story, and The Prince of Central Park. Marvin also appeared in industrial films, trade shows for major brands like McDonald's and State Farm, and with numerous dance companies as a dance soloist, singer, and actor. He worked in retail sales at Macy’s Herald Square in New York City up until his illness.
He was preceded in death by two brothers Jesse Roberson and Kenneth Roberson. He leaves to cherish his memory four brothers, Robert (Lisa) Roberson of Mesquite TX; Charlie Roberson of Hillsborough, NC; Joseph (Deborah) Roberson of Reidsville, NC; and Lloyd (Katie) Roberson of Burlington, NC; and four sisters, Rejoyce Roberson of Burlington, NC; Rev. Nancy Ross of Durham, NC; Selena Mebane of Graham, NC; and Barbara Kimber of Graham, NC; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Known for his infectious smile, kindness, and humor, Marvin's vibrant spirit and exceptional talent touched the lives of many. He will be dearly missed, but his legacy as an amazing performer will continue to inspire.
